Funmi Osunsade at 50

For some persons, nothing excites better than turning 50. This holds true for socialite and niece to Dr. Mike Adenuga, Funmi Osunsade, who turned 50 last Wednesday.

To mark the event, a thanksgiving service, was held at the Church of Resurrection, Victoria Island. This was closely followed by an open-house party at her Ikoyi, residence. An even bigger groove held at the Civic Centre on Friday and was a grand spectacle. The no-expense spared celebration had all the trappings of glamour and could be easily likened to a carnival. Funmi is mother to Toju Olowofoyeku, a designer, who owns Toju Foyeh fashion house.

Known to throw classy shindigs, many cannot forget in a jiffy the elaborate ceremonies held when she buried her mother, Esther Osunsade, five years ago. In the same manner, Funmi’s 50th birthday celebration witnessed a huge turnout of the crème of society.

Whither Tony Anenih Jnr?

He is perhaps the most popular of the children of Tony Anenih, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Peoples Democratic Party. Incidentally, Tony Anenih Jnr, who has steered clear of the political arena, was very popular especially on the social scene. Together with his stylish wife, Esosa, they attended A-list functions quite often.

However, the tale seems to be different these days. Less of Tony is now seen unlike his wife, who has been turning up at events dressed in her usual glamorous fashion.

Until she dropped out of the party scene a few years ago, Yetude Allen was one of its most adored members. Dark-skinned, pretty and stylish, this mother of two is an entrepreneur and the managing partner of Lateral Links Ltd.

For a while, it appeared she ditched the limelight for quietude. But she made a rare appearance at a groove last weekend looking resplendent in her glamorous attire that shaved a few years off her biological age.

Last weekend, the editor of Thisday Style, Ruth Osime, turned 50.To commemorate the feat, she hosted a party that is still being talked about. The groove attracted the presence of three governors and their first ladies including several A-list personalities from all walks of life. It had all the attributes of an elitist get-together.

What perhaps took many by surprise was Osime’s dexterity on the dance floor. The birthday girl, who had two changes of clothes, was in her finest elements as she wriggled and danced.

Jennifer Obayuwana, Ene Lawani sheathe sword?

$

A few weeks ago, word was rife that a no love lost situation existed between the Executive Director, Polo, Jennifer Obayuwana and former Miss Nigeria, Ene Lawani. Those who are conversant with their story will easily recollect that the latter enjoys a good relationship with the chairman, Polo, John Obayuwana (Jennifer’s father) for many years now.

Some publications (not Punch) speculated that they fell out because of Ene’s alleged unbecoming attitude which did not go down well with Jennifer. This unfounded supposition was put to test last weekend, when Jennifer and her father opened Polo Avenue, their luxury fashion retail store, in Lagos. From Ene and Jennifer’s dealings, there was nothing to suggest the pair is at daggers drawn.

Tagged a big spender by those who are privy to his lavish manners, Henry has been lying low for some time.

But he made an appearance at the opening of Polo luxury retail store last weekend. Of course, all eyes were on him and he savoured the attention in his characteristic style.

Upwardly mobile silver spoon, Jide Adenuga, is one of the cerebral sons of billionaire businessman, Dr. Mike Adenuga. Jide, who is in his early 30s, is evidently keen on building his own business empire. This and more he proved a few years ago when he launched his wine and champagne business.

Bringing his pedigree and expertise to bear on the trade, the venture flourished in no mean time. Perhaps taking a cue from his father’s entrepreneurial tendencies, he upped his game recently when he hosted the crème of society at the Porsche Centre, Lagos. There, he unveiled his new brand of champagne. The classy ceremony was graced by a select gathering of who-is-who in the social circles. One of the most sought-after bachelors in town, Jide is also the Chief Executive Officer, 3 inclusive Ltd.

Before last weekend, Sonnie Ayere had stepped out at functions in company with Ruth Osime. This led to speculations that love was in the air. Although there was no official confirmation to that effect, the pair continually savoured each other’s company.

At Ruth’s party, it was clear to all that the pair is actually in a relationship. Sonnie, who is familiar with the birthday girl’s family was everywhere, ensuring everyone was catered for.

She was married to Femi Fani-Kayode for many years and the union produced three children. Now married to Dahiru Wada, Yemisi has over the years carved a niche for herself, not just on the social scene but also as a social worker. A philanthropist, she runs a Non Governmental Organisation that specialises in rehabilitating street kids.

At some point last year, her presence on the social scene reduced considerably.

Just as people wondered what was happening to the effervescent lady, she turned up at a shindig lately. It was the 70th birthday bash of Fola Olumide, a Lagos socialite. Saying she looked trendy is stating the obvious.

Ngozi Edozien’s soaring profile

She is no pushover; at least her family and educational pedigree ensure that. Accomplished in the real sense of the word, it is not enough to introduce Ngozi Edozien as one of the children of the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Joseph Chike Edozien.  She is currently the Chief Executive of Actis West Africa and a prominent reveller. Truth is, she loves to socialise and this she does not do in half measures.

Educated at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions including Philip Exeter Academy and Harvard, where she graduated magna cum laude, Ngozi remains an eligible bachelorette. She has successfully shielded her love life from the limelight.

Wale Tinubu returns

Many will agree that the CEO of Oando Plc, Wale Tinubu’s social life is not what it used to be some years ago. For reasons best known to him, the accomplished professional decided to take a back seat on the social scene while preferring to highlight his achievements in the oil and gas industry.

But penultimate weekend, he was his remarkable self at the 50th birthday party of Thisday Style editor, Ruth Osime. Wale, who rarely grooves, took many by surprise when he spent several hours at the A-list shindig.

These bank MDs

Alex Otti and Phillip Oduoza are the Managing Directors of Diamond Bank Plc and UBA Plc respectively. Both are incisive in the discharge of their duties as the heads of these banks but that is not where their similarities terminate. If you are a keen follower of their activities on the social scene, you will discover that both love to unwind at parties.

Perhaps the most socially-active bank CEOs, the duo have a predilection (unlike most of their peers) for gracing occasions they are invited to. Not even concerts are left out. While Otti favours the company of his wife, Oduoza tows this line from time to time.

Between Akin Ariyo and Adeola Ariyo

It is no longer news that one of Nigeria’s modelling exports, Adeola Ariyo, was selected as the first ever African ambassador for the beauty company, Elizabeth Arden. Adeola, who started her modelling career at the age of 13, was one of the five finalists at the Mnet Nokia Face of Africa model search in 2005. This marked the onset of a lucrative international modelling career.

Unknown to many, Adeola is of a reputable pedigree. Her father, Akin Ariyo, is a well-known member of the social scene. He, alongside his wife, Yemi, own an A-class lighting and decor company which boasts an elitist clientele. The company, in the last few years, has been responsible for transforming Ajose Adeogun Street into a haven of sorts at yuletide.

Wave-making socialite, Eunice Efole, is not a stranger to the limelight. A staple on the social scene, she makes the guest list of A-list parties within and outside Lagos State.

An accomplished businesswoman, Eunice, who is in her 40s, was nearly denied entry to the, ‘Love like a movie’ concert which was headlined by Darey Art Alade and American act, Kelly Rowland.

She spent several minutes at the entry point and was overheard pleading with the bodyguards manning the entrance to grant her passage. After what seemed like a long wait, they eventually heeded to her plea.
