University of Lagos-trained medical doctor and former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria. Matilda Kerry is an ex-beauty queen like no other. Since handing over to her successor in 2001, Matilda who graduated in 2006 currently practises as a medical doctor.  She is also the founder of the George Kerry Life foundation, an NGO which sponsors the cervical health campaign. She also organises the annual Christmas Bake Sale, a fundraiser for charity.  Matilda whose love life has been shrouded from the public may have found her Mr. Right. It is no longer news that one of Nigeria’s finest broadcast journalists, Moji Makanjuola, is a favourite of the First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan. She is the first choice anchor for events that are directly or indirectly related to the office of the First Lady. In addition to this, they have an enviable mother-daughter relationship.

Last weekend in Abuja, Moji and her husband, Bayo Makanjuola pulled all the stops when their beautiful daughter, Tutu, got married. The wedding attracted A-list personalities including Dame Patience Jonathan, Hajia Bola Shagaya, Mrs. Titi Atiku, Mrs. Helen Mark, to mention but a few.

Her husband, Bankole Aluko (SAN)was a respected legal luminary until he passed away in 2002. He was also a socialite who was loved by many. A principal partner at Aluko&Oyebode, like his father, Dr. Timothy Aluko, he was well known.

His wife Biodun took a backseat afterwards and only began to socialise again years after his death. She even celebrated her 50th birthday in an elaborate manner. The groove which had in attendance the crème of society was grand. Shortly after that, Abiodun who trained as a medical doctor went underground and has remained so.

For Kayode Odukoya, the Chief Executive Officer of the now defunct Bellview Airlines, it is not yet uhuru. Many will remember that his entry into the aviation industry was marked with a lot of promises until the centre could no longer hold. The airline began to fish in troubled waters after one of the planes in its fleet crashed in 2005. In a bid to salvage what was left of the airline, it was rebranded but that also failed to revive his dreams.

Taking a long break from the social scene, Odukoya has resumed frequenting the social milieu. In his characteristic charm, he has been rubbing shoulders with his ilk at gigs again.

In line with what obtains in other parts of the world, it is not unusual for prominent families to host friends to parties to usher in a new year. In this part of the divide, the likes of billionaire banker, Otunba Subomi Balogun are known to have made this trend a yearly occurrence.

Also on the list of Nigerians who adore this trend is the Mbadiwes. Their father Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe popularly known as K.O Mbadiwe was a nationalist and politician in his lifetime. Greg Mbadiwe who is perhaps the most popular of K.O Mbadiwe’s children and his siblings this year hosted another one in the series of New Year parties. The groove featured a long list of socialites and rave of the moment artistes.

At 18, Abiola Bashorun was crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria in 2006 and thus began her foray into the limelight. Her scandal-free reign soon came to an end and she handed over to her successor. Apart from making a few appearances here and there, Abiola has since zeroed out of view. Unlike most former beauty queens who have remained relevant in the scheme of things, the same cannot be said for Abiola who relocated to London where she is schooling and working at the same time.

Already there are talks that she may have tied the knot albeit secretly. Her status on Facebook reads ‘married to Barilee Ledor Apenu.’  From time to time, she makes private visits to Nigeria but so far, she has steered clear of the social scene.

Ope Makinwa is blogger and on-air-personality Toke Makinwa’s elder sister. Incidentally Ope hit the limelight long before Toke did. Petite and good-looking , Ope ranked among the upwardly mobile ladies on the Island and was friendly  with a lot of silver spoons . On-air-personality,  Fade Ogunro who was bereaved in the last days of 2013  is gradually getting her groove back. Her father and advertising guru Sesan Ogunro was murdered a few days to Christmas.The loss caused Fade to slow down on her outings. Last weekend she  showed up at a major event in Lagos. Take Ibori is perhaps the most prominent of the children of the imprisoned former governor of Delta State, James Ibori.  Dark and fairly pretty, Take who is a single mother is known to have dated the owner of an upscale hangout in Lagos. So in love were they, that marriage was believed to be on the cards for both of them even though the latter is married.

Seen socialite-cum-property merchant Alaba Shonibare lately? Those who are familiar with his story will recollect that the well-liked socialite remarried last year at a low-key but classy ceremony that had only family and close friends in attendance.

His decision to take another shot at matrimony happened almost two years after he lost his equally famous wife, Nike Shonibare to breast cancer.  Nike who was a friend to several top notch socialites in her lifetime, was survived by her husband and son.
